The last two weeks of October were very busy. We missed two days because of Hurricane Ophelia. Jack’s dad John went down to Cork to help fix roofs that were damaged. The younger children entered a Halloween colouring competition in one of the local shops. We all enjoyed the activities for Maths Week. We did Maths Trails, Quizzes and loads of Problem Solving. Junior and Senior Infants designed hats for Winnie the Witch and made a spooktacular book! The Senior Room created Mysterious Midnight Owls with paint and oil pastels. We went to see a great show in Galway as part of the Barboró festival. It was called “They Called Her Vivaldi”. It was excellent. Everybody had a great time dressing up on Thursday. The Senior Room took part in “The Raft Challenge” where we had to construct a raft using lollipop sticks and elastic bands. We were absolutely delighted to host a concert by The Lyric FM Quartet. It was absolutely super. We were so lucky to have experienced such wonderful music in our school. It helped us realise that practising our music is a good idea. Jack, Daragh and Evan

A wet, October week. We made a great attempt to train for the Mini Sevens taking place in Kilmaine pitch on Friday, 13th October. Unfortunately it was postponed due to the weather. 4th, 5th and 6th classes had been training hard for the event. We were determined to give it our all, even though the weather was wet and cold. Ms. Geraghty and Mr. Cathal Harte were helping us with the training. They worked on techniques such as solo skills and hand passing, which we found useful. We hope to do well up against the other local schools whenever the Mini Sevens is rescheduled. Our Parents Association have been working on upgrading and improving the pitch. We had a visit from Miss McAlpine, the Deputy Principal of P.C.H., telling us about an exciting Open Day in Headford next Tuesday. Our sixth class children Lucy, Maeve, Roisin, Alan, Jason and Karl will be heading there. It will be a very exciting day for them. They will try their hand at various subjects including Woodwork, Metalwork, Technical Graphics, German, French, Spanish and pretty much all sports. The sixth class were given resource packs with all the details. Violin lessons are in full swing. We also had a busy IT week. The sixth class did some Peer Tutoring (teaching Miss Muldoon's room how to use the Seesaw app.) I think Seesaw is great. It is very clever because it can make students feel more involved by using comments and likes. You can display pictures of the work that you feel proud of. Also your classmates and teachers can put encouraging comments on your work and even put a like on it! The Senior Room had a great time using the app Kahoot on the ipads. It was competitive but really good fun. The Junior and Senior Infants in Ms.O’Haire’s room made some scary spooky pumpkin facemasks....Tá Oíche Shamhna ag teacht agus tá na puimcíní reidh............. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd classes in Ms. Muldoon’s room were learning about Pablo Picasso. Picasso was a Spanish artist who drew obscure, out of shape pictures. People like his work because the pictures were unique. So we attempted to create our own unique pictures. We drew Picasso type pictures using either witches or Frankenstein,....most of the boys went for Frankenstein while the girls did the witches......Don't they look great with our scarecrows? We are really looking forward to next week as it is Maths Week. Check out Ms. Presnail’s super display....... Emma and Conn
We did a lot a science this week. Declan from Science Ireland came to visit again on Tuesday 3rd October. This time, as it was Space Week, he demonstrated a 3D virtual reality tour of the eight planets....Mars, Venus, Earth, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. He showed us what would happen if the sun was a 1000 times bigger...BOOM. We really enjoyed looking at all the planets in detail. An interesting fact we discovered was about the length of the jumps a person could do on each planet. Declan explained that planets have different gravities so jumping lengths are different. For example, if you could survive on the sun you would only be able to jump 3cm and on Uranus you would only be able to jump 1cm. As part of space week 2017 our school has been included in TARA moon project. We will receive our unique image of the moon soon-how exciting!!! We even got mentioned on Science Ireland’s Facebook page Ms. O Haire’s room had great fun playing with the parachute and ball. They have been working on the "The Gruffalo" story. The Junior and Senior Infants drew gruesome Gruffalos and they are on display in our hallway for all to see and scare!!!! Ms Muldoon's room are making great progress with Scratch Junior on the iPads. Scratch is a form of animation and programming where you make characters move. Danny likes Scratch because you can change backgrounds and headings. Luke likes Scratch because you can make the characters move and talk to you. The Senior room have been using the app "Seesaw" to upload work into their online e-folios. We each have a digital folder to put work into. You have to use the class Q.R. code to access the folders. It’s an exciting way of displaying our work. Yesterday PE outside was fun. We were playing football and basketball. Everyone had a great time and we all kept getting shot after shot in the net. We love basketball.
John McMahon, the photographer, came on Thursday to take our photos. We all looked lovely. Aisling, Eleanor and Stephen |
