Congratulations to these children in second class who received the Sacrament of the Eucharist on Saturday. Well done to all involved especially the children themselves and also to the children from our school who sang and played so beautifully. A lovely party, organised by the parents was held in the Community Centre afterwards.
This super team was successful in their semi-final game against Errew N.S. in McHale Park on Thursday. This now sees us in the county Cumann na mBunscol final. Well done everyone.
On Thursday the boys and girls took part in the Cumann na mbunscol competition in Ballinrobe G.A.A. pitch. The girls played very well and did their very best on the day. In their first game the boys played Robeen and won by 9 points. Next they played Partry and won by 13 points. They played Cloonliffen next to see who would go through to the quarter final. Our boys came out on top winning by a comfortable 31 points. Next Tuesday our boys will play Mayo Abbey in Claremorris to determine who will go through to the semi-final. Good luck lads.
Senior Room Art
Mr. Bourke’s room did Skyline art. We painted a sunset and seascape, we also cut out buildings out of black card and some people recreated cities around the world.
The weather is getting warmer and the junior room constructed some lovely dandelions from cotton buds, felt and paper.
It is the month of May now and it is a month dedicated to Mary, the mother of God. This week we have all started preparing for the First Holy Communion which will take place on Saturday, the 18th of May at 12:00 noon. We have been singing, practising violin and practising tin whistle. We are all enjoying the preparation for the communion and second class are very excited for their special day. The second class have been going down to the church and practising their prayers, singing and going through the communion mass. There are nine children making their Communion this year. Everyone in the school is excited to participate in the choir and help with the music instruments.
This is the beginning of the final term in this school year. We like to keep our school looking nice so we did some planting this week.
Friday the 3rd of May was Mayo day at our school and everyone had their Mayo jerseys and hoodies on. This is an annual event and it’s extra special this year as the Mayo senior team is heading to New York to play them in the Connacht quarter final. There are 10,000 Mayo fans travelling for the match! The last time Mayo played New York they beat them by 22 points. The junior infants, senior infants and first class made Mayo jerseys. Let’s hope Mayo have a really good game at Gaelic Park.
A visit from Agri Aware
This week we had a visitor at school who taught us about farm safety. Her name was Alma and she came from Agri Aware. She talked about being safe on the farm. She said stay clear of tractors because they are dangerous and she said to also be wary of bulls. She warned us about the dangers of cows especially if they have just given birth. We went through the different types of signs we usually see on a farm. It was a very informative and enjoyable morning.
On Friday, the 3rd of May, a representative from Ballinrobe Fire Brigade came to speak to the children in Ms. Muldoon’s room about fire safety. He told us the ways that fire can start in our houses. Some of the dangerous things that can start a fire are deep fat fryers, cables and when you leave your heating on. He also told us ways to extinguish fires such as a fire blanket and fire extinguishers. He brought in gear. He showed us a helmet, a coat and a breathing apparatus. He told us that his gear can withstand up to 600 C. We all had an amazing time with the fireman, and he gave us lots of tips to be safe. We hope he comes again
We have just received these 'Bee-Bots' on loan from Mayo Education Centre. These little robots will help us to learn coding, sequencing, estimation, and problem-solving in a fun-filled way. We will be recording our adventures with these little creatures on our STEM page so remember to check back over the next few weeks.
Happy Easter to all our pupils and their families. We are looking forward to the final term which starts on Monday, the 29th of April.
F.A.I. Spar 5s
We are very proud of these boys who reached the Mayo final of the F.A.I. 5-a-side competition in Solar 21 Park in Castlebar on Wednesday. You can read our match report under the photo.
On Wednesday, April the 10th, our senior room boys represented the South Mayo district in the F.A.I. Spar 5's in Solar 21 Park, Castlebar. Our squad on the day was: Patrick, Eóin, Daragh, Tom, Evan and Stephen. The first match was against Parke N.S. It was a good game which saw Tom scoring a hat-trick and Evan scoring a goal to end the match 4-1. Up next was a match against Eachleim N.S. which we won with a scoreline of 3-1. Evan hit the back of the net twice. Eóin scored also. Those two comprehensive wins ensured our place in the semi-final which saw us up against our neighbours, Cong N.S. The scoreline in this tense match was 2-1 after extra time. We reached the final which we played against Brackloon N. S. We had a great match but unfortunately the result didn't go our way on the day. Tom scored in this match and the final scoreline was 2-1. We played very well all day and it was a huge honour to represent our school in a final at county level.
Thursday afternoon was a very enjoyable one in our school. We were delighted to showcase all the work we had done in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Our parents and grandparents visited and we all really enjoyed the experience. Please visit our STEM page for more details.
