The Senior Room are learning about China, a country of 1.4 billion people!
We created some lovely Chinese art as we listened to both traditional and modern Chinese music.  We researched our names in Chinese, traced them and decorated the page. Surprisingly a lot of Irish names translated into Chinese.
We looked at a Chinese dragon made out of cupcake wrappers, we made ours from paper plates. We decorated them with our own designs......they look really bright and colourful.
In maths we did the number of the day. The number of the day on Thursday was 124. We had to make sums that made 124. It was fun and got our brains going. There were some very good sums.
We started playing a new sport called Futsal. It's like soccer just there are a few different rules.
The rules are mainly no kicking ball above the waist and you have to stop the ball with the ball of your foot. Also the ball is heavier than a regular soccer ball.
We were also busy freshening up our window boxes...we removed the dead pansies and dahlias and put in lovely heathers and cyclamens.
They look colourful and full of life, they stand out and the colours look great together!

A science teacher called Declan Holmes came to visit us on Thursday. He told us about the history of space travel. He asked us if we wanted to build super cool rockets and of course everybody said YES!!
Declan is very imaginative and smart and he loves science, especially rocket science. He taught us a lot of interesting stuff about space.  We named our rockets too. One of the rockets was named “Apollo Girls”.  Declan said that within 15 to 20 years, anybody will be able to go to space.

This weekend Mayo Ladies will compete for the Brendan Martin Cup in Croke Park. Mayo Ladies last won the Brendan Martin Cup in 2003.
Maybe Mayo ladies might win the cup and bring it home to the west....they will be looking to beat Dublin in the final and show the rest of Ireland how good a team they are....
Lots of the girls are travelling up to Croke Park in two buses...the under 14s and under 12 girls are going with coaches/parents Cathal Harte and Brian Costello.
Violin lessons with Sorcha are going well.  We really enjoy them. 3rd to 5th classes are learning violin. Sorcha is a great violin teacher. She is a very kind teacher and she explains a lot about violins. We are very happy that our school has decided to do violin lessons. It is a great opportunity to learn music.

Congrats to the children from 1st and 3rd classes who completed their first Brick Club Project this week.

This was a very busy but very enjoyable week at Cross N.S. Brick Club started on Wednesday in Ms. Presnail's room. Violin lessons with Sorcha started on Wednesday and Irish dancing lessons started on Thursday.  We had our mass for the beginning of the school year on Thursday morning at 9.30am. After mass, athletes from 1st-6th classes travelled by bus to Ballinrobe Racecourse for a Cross Country competition. We all did really well. Cliodhna from 2nd class came 2nd in her category!!!!! Well done Cliodhna, we are so proud of you.

We had a "Green and Red Day" on Friday.  Everyone dressed up in their Mayo colours.  We had a disco in the afternoon. It was super. We had great fun. We would like to thank the Parents' Association for all their hard work. We had a raffle for a signed Mayo jersey and a football signed by all the Mayo Team.  The Mayo jersey was won by Adam and Leah's granny. Ms Geraghty won the football but she gave it back. Every pupil's name went into a hat and Evan's was the one pulled out.  Well done Evan.

The new year started for us on Friday 1st September 2017.
The first week back was exciting .... new books, friends to catch up with after a long, hot summer.  Lots of interesting summer stories were shared about the various places we had visited, such as The Isle of Man, Clifden, Spike Island, Majorca, The Aran Islands, France, England and Croatia.
We welcomed the new Infants class, 8 new junior infants in Ms O Haire's room and 2 new girls in Ms.Muldoon's room,  Ava in 3rd class and Rachel in 1st class.
The new juniors finish at 12:30 for the first 2 weeks Lucky them!
Children in third, fourth and fifth will start learning the violin next week. They are really looking forward to it as it is a great opportunity.  They met their teacher, Sorcha on Wednesday.

We are busy training for Cross Country which will be held in Ballinrobe soon.
We will have a mass for the start of the new school year in Cross church next Thursday morning.

It's great to be back in routine and to see our friends and our teacher Ms Geraghty.
