The Junior Room had great fun in “Fun Friends” on Thursday. We learned a new technique called “Milkshake Breathing” to help us feel better when we feel angry, upset, nervous or afraid. We breathed in through our nose and breathed out very gently through a straw. We blew bubbles in cups of water, just like the bubbles in a milkshake. The trick is to blow gently and this calms us down.
Mini Sevens
On Wednesday, we took part in the Mini-Sevens competition in Cong. The day before, we went down to the pitch to practise our skills and drills. The boys went down to the pitch training during break and the girls went down at 2:20pm. Mr Bourke went down with us and did a great training session to improve our skills.
Wednesday morning was cloudy and cold. When we arrived in Cong, we put our bags in the home dugout and we also put on our gear. The girls’ first match was against Cloonliffen and we had an easy enough win. Then it was the boys’ turn. We played Kilmaine. Kilmaine was a tough side but the boys kept their focus and won the game by 12 points.
The girls’ next match was against Cong. The girls knew Cong would be a very tough side. It was a tough, tight first half but Cong dominated us in the second half. We lost by only a few points.
Soon after the boys played Tourmakeady. It was a hard-fought match. At half time we were two points up. Tourmakeady improved their skills in the second half and in the end, we lost by 2 points. We were happy to escape school for most of the day but disappointed to lose. There’s always next year.

A Musical Treat
This week is work experience week in the secondary schools around our area. This means that every student chooses a place that they would like to work in and experience the trials and tribulations of the job! They also go on work experience to see if the job suits them. Our past pupil from 2014, Caitriona Murphy joined us this week. Caitriona goes to P.C.H. in Headford and is a member of choirs and orchestras, so we were very lucky when she treated us to selection of her tunes and songs. She is an excellent musician and can play the trumpet, guitar and piano. When she started to sing, we were quite amazed at the strength and the depth of her voice as she sang ” Autumn Leaves”. We wish Caitriona all the best.
